The new design of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24 series has been leaked, starting with the smallest member of the family. The leaked CAD renders of the Galaxy S24, shared by renowned leaker Steve “McFly” Hemmerstoffer, show a significant design change compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy S23.
The most noticeable change is the flattened sides of the Galaxy S24, which give it a more blocky shape similar to the iPhone 15 Pro and Sony Xperia phones. This design departure from the sloping curve typically seen in the Galaxy S line is a notable shift for Samsung.
While it is unclear if Samsung will use new frame materials for the Galaxy S24, similar to Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro series, it is expected that the Galaxy S24 will not feature any premium materials like titanium, as it is positioned as the most affordable member of Samsung’s flagship series for 2024.
Another design change on the Galaxy S24 is the elliptical area located below the side keys. Contrary to rumors suggesting a capacitive “Capture” button like the one rumored for the iPhone 16, the CAD files reveal that this space is likely dedicated to an Ultra Wideband (UWB) antenna. This feature is similar to the U.S. versions of the Galaxy S23, which require UWB functionality to function on Verizon’s network.
The inclusion of a UWB antenna close to the surface of the phone helps improve signal strength, particularly for Verizon’s mmWave bands that deliver high-speed 5G network connectivity. It is worth noting that the specific material covering the area of the Galaxy S24’s antenna remains uncertain but it could potentially aid the network signal’s penetration.
Apart from these notable changes, the overall design of the Galaxy S24 remains largely unchanged. The vertical camera arrangement with separate lens islands and the matte finish will reportedly carry over from its predecessor. Furthermore, the dimensions of the Galaxy S24, measuring 147 x 70.5 x 7.6 mm, closely resemble the size of the Galaxy S23.
In terms of specifications, the Galaxy S24 is not expected to undergo any significant hardware upgrades. While it may feature the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the camera and battery configurations are likely to remain the same. This means the device will maintain a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide snapper, and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens, unless there are some sensor improvements.
It remains to be seen how the flattened sides of the Galaxy S24 will impact its ergonomics. However, it is highly likely that users will protect the device with a case after purchase. The inclusion of a dedicated UWB antenna area on the side raises questions about Samsung’s choice of frame materials, but further details on this aspect will likely be revealed when leaks for the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra emerge.
