Avoid Speed Traps with Google Maps, Waze, and Apple Maps
Getting a speeding ticket can really put a damper on your day, especially if you get caught in a speed trap. According to MarketWatch, Google Maps is the go-to navigation app for drivers looking to steer clear of speed traps. In a survey of over 1,000 American drivers (with an average age of 41), 70% favored Google Maps for avoiding speed traps.
Following Google Maps, Waze – also owned by Google – is the second most popular choice among drivers surveyed. Waze takes a crowdsourced approach to gathering information, making it a reliable option for avoiding speed traps. Apple Maps comes in third place as the favorite navigation app for 25% of survey participants.
What exactly constitutes a speed trap? MarketWatch defines it as an area where the speed limit is set lower than the road’s safest average rate of travel. These areas are closely monitored by police to enforce strict speed limits and generate revenue. Interestingly, 30% of Americans have fallen victim to speed traps.
If you’re curious about which states have the most speed traps, Delaware, Maryland, and Tennessee top the list. On the other hand, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska have the fewest speed traps.
While 70% of drivers rely on Google Maps to alert them about speed traps, Waze is considered the most effective at this task. Drivers claim that Waze is 30% more effective than Google Maps and 20% better than Apple Maps in warning about speed traps.
Surprisingly, Google Maps users are more likely to drive over the speed limit compared to Waze and Apple Maps users. About 23% of Google Maps users admitted to driving with a lead foot, while only 11% of Waze users and 9% of Apple Maps users confessed to exceeding the speed limit.
