Universal Music Group Content Facing Removal on TikTok as Deal Remains Unsettled

TikTok is currently in the process of removing Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) content from its platform due to the lack of a new licensing agreement with the music label. This means that videos featuring songs written by UMPG songwriters are being muted on TikTok. The licensing deal between TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG) expired on January 31, prompting these actions.

Despite this development, TikTok has expressed its willingness to negotiate a new deal with UMG. However, it is likely that all UMPG content will be removed from the platform by the end of February to comply with legal requirements.

In January 2024, UMG announced that it was unable to reach new deal terms with TikTok, citing disagreements over artist payments and the use of AI by the video app. This led to tensions between the two parties, with Universal Music accusing TikTok of seeking less favorable terms than before.

UMG represents a diverse range of artists including Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, Drake, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and many more. Despite this wide array of talent, there have been no notable TikTok videos featuring Bob Dylan’s music.

Previously, TikTok users were able to incorporate clips from UMG’s catalog into their videos following a deal reached in February 2021. While UMG stated that TikTok only accounts for about 1% of its total revenue, TikTok claims that UMG and UMPG songs make up around 20% to 30% of popular music on the platform depending on the region.
