Unlocking New iOS 18 Features: Face ID App Security and Dark Mode Enhancements for Home Screen Icons

Rumors are circulating that iOS 18 may bring some exciting changes for iPhone users, offering more flexibility with app icons on their home screens. According to MacRumors, sources have revealed that selecting Dark Mode for the iPhone will introduce a dark black tint for home screen app icons. Initially, this feature will be limited to Apple apps, automatically applying the dark black tint when Dark Mode is enabled. There’s also speculation that Apple may provide an API for third-party app developers to utilize, allowing non-Apple apps to support this feature.

Recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple might allow iPhone users to customize the color of home screen app icons and rearrange them anywhere on the screen. MacRumors suggests that the dark tint for app icons in Dark Mode could be related to Gurman’s mentioned feature. This potential change could make it easier for users to identify and locate specific apps quickly by categorizing them based on colors (e.g., News apps in one color, Social Media in another).

The ability to lock apps behind Face ID, Touch ID, or a Passcode is another rumored addition in iOS 18. This privacy feature is already available on some Android devices and would provide added security by preventing unauthorized access to protected apps. With this feature, users can confidently share their unlocked iPhones without worrying about sensitive information being accessed.

While some users have resorted to using Screen Time or Shortcuts to lock their apps temporarily, iOS 18 may streamline this process by integrating a dedicated locking mechanism within the operating system. Apple Developer Program members are expected to gain early access to the first iOS 18 beta shortly after the upcoming WWDC Keynote. A public beta release is anticipated in July, allowing a wider audience to experience the new features and enhancements firsthand.
