WhatsApp is planning to introduce usernames for channels on its messaging app, following in the footsteps of Signal, which recently announced that it is testing public usernames for individuals. This move is aimed at enhancing anonymity, as usernames will be used instead of phone numbers. This feature is still in development, and while a beta version of WhatsApp for Android (version 2.23.24.17) will not include profile usernames, usernames for channels could be introduced in the future.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is not yet ready for beta testers, but it is expected to have important advantages for the user experience. Users will be able to share channel information more consistently by using usernames, eliminating the need for complex channel links. Additionally, channels can establish a more recognizable presence by having a unique username, making them easily accessible and helping to build a distinct identity for the channel.
WhatsApp’s boss, Will Cathcart, recently reassured users that they will not see ads in their chat inbox section. He emphasized that the company does not think placing ads in the inbox or chats is the right model, as people do not want to see advertising when they open their inbox. However, he did not rule out the possibility of ads being displayed in other parts of the app in the future.
