WhatsApp Introduces Passkeys on iOS: Enhancing Security for Mobile Users

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, is introducing a new security feature to enhance account security for iPhone users. Passkeys, which were previously available on Android devices, are now rolling out on iOS as well.

Passkeys offer a more secure login method compared to traditional SMS passcodes, which can be susceptible to phishing attempts. This feature securely stores an authentication code on your device, linked to a unique code held by WhatsApp. When logging in, users can verify their identity using facial recognition (Face ID), fingerprint scan (Touch ID), or a secure PIN/passcode on their device. This eliminates the need for easily compromised one-time SMS codes.

Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp’s head of product, expressed enthusiasm for this enhanced security measure by stating that “Passkey verification will make logging back into WhatsApp easier and more secure.” The rollout of this feature was promptly shared on Twitter by the official WhatsApp account.

If you’re an iPhone user interested in trying out this new login method, you’ll soon have the opportunity to do so. The passkeys feature is currently being rolled out and expected to be available for all users in the coming days. To enable passkeys, simply navigate to your WhatsApp account settings and tap on Account > Passkeys.

The addition of passkeys on WhatsApp for iOS users not only offers a more convenient login experience but also enhances platform security and reduces vulnerability to phishing attacks. This update aligns with the industry-wide trend towards stronger authentication methods, providing users with greater peace of mind knowing their conversations are private and protected.
