Phones Canada Team Analysis: Top Shipped Smartphones in the First Half of 2023

According to data from Omdia’s Smartphone Model Market Tracker, the iPhone 14 Pro Max secured the title of the most shipped smartphone worldwide during the first half of 2023. Priced between $1,099 and $1,599, Apple shipped approximately 26.5 million units of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Trailing closely behind, the iPhone 14 Pro, priced between $999 and $1,499, reached a shipment count of 21 million units. These impressive numbers solidify Apple’s dominance in the market.

Interestingly, in the first half of 2022, the basic iPhone 13 held the top spot with 33.7 million units shipped globally. With a price range of $799 to $1,099, the iPhone 13 was a popular choice among consumers. However, this year, the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro managed to surpass its predecessor in terms of shipment volumes.

The top five smartphones for the first half of 2023 consisted of two iPhone models and one Samsung Galaxy device. The iPhone 14 claimed third place with 16.5 million units shipped, followed by the iPhone 13 in fourth place with 15.5 million units. The Galaxy A14, a non-iOS model, took the fifth spot with 12.4 million units shipped worldwide. This mid-range device boasts a compelling blend of affordability, a triple camera setup (including a 50MP primary camera), and a powerful 5000mAh battery.

The presence of the Galaxy A14 in the top five may not come as a surprise since its predecessor, the Galaxy A13, occupied the third position in the first half of 2022 with 16.2 million units delivered.

Beyond the top five, Samsung dominated the list with the next four models. The Galaxy S23 Ultra secured the sixth spot with 9.6 million units shipped globally. This successor followed in the footsteps of its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G, which held the sixth position last year with 9.8 million units delivered. The Galaxy A14 5G took seventh place with 9 million units shipped, while the Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A34 5G claimed the eighth and ninth positions with 8.8 million and 7.1 million units shipped respectively. Closing the top ten, the iPhone 11 reached 6.9 million units in transit during the first half of 2023.

While Apple and Samsung dominated this year’s list, the first half of 2022 saw Xiaomi’s Redmi phones, the Note 11 and the 9A, securing the ninth and tenth positions. Jusy Hong, Senior Research Manager at Omdia, expects Android-based smartphone shipments to experience negative growth this year, while Apple’s shipments of Pro and Pro Max models will increase due to significant demand. However, overall iPhone shipments may remain similar to last year or slightly decrease due to weaker demand for standard and plus models.

This market analysis sheds light on the dynamic landscape of the smartphone industry, showcasing the popularity of Apple and Samsung devices in the global market.
