Apple is reportedly seeking to increase royalty payments to musicians who utilize Dolby Atmos in their music.

Apple is reportedly interested in encouraging more musicians to create Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos-supported tracks for its Apple Music service. According to Bloomberg, the tech giant is considering offering higher royalties for songs mixed using Dolby Atmos. This move is aimed at increasing the availability of Spatial Audio music on the platform.

Spatial Audio, which delivers an immersive 3D audio experience, is currently compatible with Apple Music and select audio devices such as AirPods Pro. The intention behind offering higher royalties is to incentivize musicians and record labels to remix older tracks and create new ones using Dolby Atmos technology. This initiative is expected to attract more subscribers to Apple Music and drive sales of compatible audio devices.

While the specifics of the incentives have not been officially disclosed by Apple, the sources suggest that the cost of mixing with Dolby Atmos is considered to be “broadly affordable.” Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support were first introduced by Apple in 2021 and are available on select iPhone models, MacBook Pros, and HomePods. When used with compatible headphones or earbuds, such as the AirPods Pro, the feature also includes head tracking for an enhanced listening experience.

It’s important to note that the information about Apple’s plans for incentivizing Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos music is unofficial and has not been confirmed by the company. However, if implemented, it could have a significant impact on the availability of immersive audio content for Apple Music users.
