Apple’s stance against sideloading apps makes sense when considering the potential risks involved. By allowing users to install unvetted apps, there is a higher chance of malicious software infiltrating devices. Even with Apple’s strict vetting process, some harmful apps still manage to make their way into the App Store.
One recent example involves a fake app called Rabby Wallet & Crypto Solution. This fraudulent app imitated a legitimate crypto app that is currently under review by Apple. The real developer of Rabby Wallet took to Twitter to warn users about the fake app and advised them to only download from the official website.
Cybercriminals behind Rabby Wallet & Crypto Solution took advantage of the absence of the real app in the App Store. They even went as far as copying the logo of the legitimate app, leading to substantial financial losses for some users. Complaints on Reddit and Rabby Discord revealed that over $100,000 was stolen by the fake app before it was finally removed by Apple.
Despite being removed from the App Store, the scam app may still be installed on some iPhones. If you have Rabby Wallet & Crypto Solution on your device, it is crucial to uninstall it immediately.
It’s essential to stay cautious and only download apps from trusted sources like the official App Store to avoid falling victim to similar scams in the future.
