Meta recently rolled out a new social media app called Threads, which operates in a similar way to X (formerly Twitter). This app allows users to post and share text, images, and videos, as well as engage with other users’ content through replies, reposts, and likes.
One of the latest developments for Threads is the introduction of a Trending feature. This feature will allow users to discover posts on the most popular topics on the platform. Although the feature is not yet widely available, Threads is now introducing it to users in the US.
According to Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri, the Trending feature on Threads will help users discover “timely topics people are talking about.” These hot topics can be found in the Search tab and the For You feed. The topics are chosen by AI, which analyzes user engagement on the platform. Additionally, these topics will undergo human review to ensure accuracy and avoid duplication.
However, this approach seems to contradict Meta’s recent stance on political content. Just a few days ago, Mosseri made it clear that both Instagram and Threads are putting the brakes on recommending political content to users. Despite this stance, the Trending feature could still elevate political discussions organically based on user engagement.
The Trending feature is currently being rolled out to a select group of users in the US. Instagram’s CEO mentioned that they aim to “learn from this test and iterate over time” before extending the feature to more regions and languages.
This new development from Threads shows how Meta continues to explore ways for users to engage with current hot topics while also being mindful of potential controversial content. It will be interesting to see how this feature evolves over time and its impact on user experience within the platform. We look forward to seeing how this test progresses and what it means for future updates on Threads.
