Global AirTag Update: Apple Mishap Leads to Simultaneous Upgrade Worldwide

Apple recently encountered a unique situation with its AirTag firmware update, resulting in all AirTag units worldwide receiving the update simultaneously. Typically, Apple staggers the release of firmware updates to prevent overwhelming its systems. However, a mistake in setting the deployment date for the AirTag update version 2.0.73 caused this unexpected scenario.

The error occurred when the deployment date format was mistakenly set as “m/d/24” instead of the correct format “m/d/2024.” This led AirTags to believe that the deployment dates were in the year 24, triggering a 100% rollout batch to update all units globally at once.

Despite this oversight, Apple did not provide a detailed changelog for the update, leaving AirTag owners curious about what changes to expect. This marks the first update for the AirTag tracker since last October. To update your AirTag, simply keep it near your paired iPhone and open the Find My app to initiate the process.

In other news related to AirTag, Apple faced a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for allegations that criminals have misused the item tracker for stalking purposes. Judge Vince Chhabria recently declined to dismiss the case, acknowledging sufficient claims of negligence and product liability against Apple by three plaintiffs.

Overall, this unexpected firmware update incident sheds light on Apple’s commitment to enhancing user experience and addressing any unforeseen challenges that may arise along the way. Stay tuned for more updates on AirTag and other innovative Apple products!
