Android users may have noticed a subtle change to a familiar home screen feature recently. The “At a Glance” widget, a trusted tool on Android devices, has undergone a shift that hints at potential changes in Google Assistant’s role within the Android experience.
The “At a Glance” widget has always been handy, displaying vital information such as the current weather, upcoming calendar events, reminders, and more. On Google Pixel devices, it remains a permanent fixture (for now). On other Android devices, it can usually be found within the list of Android widgets under the Google category, named “Assistant at a Glance,” highlighting its connection to Google Assistant.
In October of last year, the widget received a refreshing redesign with a more modern and material look. However, in the latest beta version of the Google app (v.15.11.42.28.x), the word “assistant” has quietly been removed from the widget’s title and settings descriptions.
This alteration sparks speculation and suggests an intentional move to separate the “At a Glance” functionality from Google Assistant branding. The reasoning behind this decision remains unclear at this time. Some believe it could be related to the launch of the Gemini app on Android, rumored to eventually replace Google Assistant.
Currently, the Gemini app on Android does not offer all the features present in Google Assistant. Basic functions like setting timers or alarms, reading aloud web pages, or identifying songs are still missing.
Despite uncertainties about Google’s future plans, this change simplifies and clarifies the widget’s name. It also raises hopes for significant improvements to come in the Gemini app—potentially transforming it into a worthy replacement for our beloved Assistant.
