User Experience: Are OLED Displays on New iPad Pro Tablets Too Grainy?

Apple has just launched the latest iPad models, featuring a groundbreaking OLED display technology. These new tablets boast a tandem OLED display that offers a brighter and more durable screen, thanks to two layers of OLED stacked together. With no need for a backlight, the 11-inch and 13-inch iPads are incredibly thin at 5.3mm and 5.1mm respectively, powered by the cutting-edge 3nm Apple M4 chip.

Throughout 2023, Apple kept fans waiting for new iPad releases, breaking its usual pattern of annual updates since the original model in 2010. Excitement was high for these top-of-the-line tablets, but early users have noticed a drawback with the OLED displays – grainy images.

Speculation is rife about the cause of this grainy appearance on the new tandem OLED displays. Some attribute it to misalignment in the display technology, while others point to the “mura effect,” commonly seen on OLED screens like those on smartphones. This effect occurs when different currents from thin-film-transistors (TFT) reach the OLED screen cells unevenly, resulting in dark spots.

On platforms like Reddit, users have shared their observations of this issue, with one user noting how noticeable it is in dark settings without reflections. The lower pixel density and larger screen size of these iPads compared to smartphones may amplify this display issue.

Interestingly, earlier this year, some Galaxy S24 Ultra users reported similar grainy images on their phones. Samsung addressed this with an update after initially suggesting it was a feature rather than a bug. Will Apple follow suit? The tech giant has yet to comment or release any fixes as it’s still early days since the iPad Pro launch.

Stay tuned for updates on whether Apple will address these display concerns and improve user experience with their latest iPad models!
