Get notified when a friend is celebrating a special occasion

Google Contacts now allows users to receive reminders and notifications for all saved dates associated with a person in their Contacts app. Previously, users were only able to get notifications for a contact’s birthday, but now, any significant date can trigger a notification.

To get started, open the Phone app on your Android device and tap on the Contacts tab at the bottom of the display. Then select the name of the contact with a date you want to be notified about. Tap on the three-dot overflow menu icon in the top right corner of the display and choose Reminders. To create a new reminder, press the blue pill-shaped button that says “New reminder.”

By default, the Birthday label will appear. However, to be notified about a different type of event, tap on the box marked “Label.” You will then see three options: Birthday, Anniversary, and Custom. If you want to save the date when you need to turn in a story about the iPhone 15 Pro Max, for example, you can tap on “Custom” and label the notification “iPhone 15 Pro Max Story.” Then, select the date when the story is due.

Users can also receive a phone notification for significant dates, with the option to choose the day of the event, two days before, seven days before, or two weeks before. Yearly reminders for custom dates will only appear if notifications are added. It’s worth noting that creating a birthday, anniversary, or custom event notification will also create a reminder in Google Calendar.

This new feature is available for those using version 4.20 of Google Contacts for Android. To check your current version, go to Settings > Apps and scroll down to Contacts. Tap on Contacts and scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the version number.
