While this year we saw all Galaxy S23 models equipped with a custom version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, it seems that Samsung might change its strategy for next year. According to reports, the company is considering a mix of in-house chips and Snapdragon chips for different models. However, details on how this will be implemented are still unclear.
The performance of the Exynos 2200 chip used in the European variants of the Galaxy S22 series fell short of expectations. This is believed to be the reason why Samsung opted for a Snapdragon chip, specifically the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, for all Galaxy S23 models.
Now, moving on to the exciting news for the Galaxy S24 series. Rumors suggest that Samsung will introduce a special version of the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip for these devices. Alleged Geekbench results, shared by a Korean blog, indicate that this custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip will offer significantly more power compared to the standard version that will be used in other top Android phones.
For instance, the Samsung SM-S926U, likely the model number for the Galaxy S24 Plus, reportedly scored 2,233 points in the single-core test and 6,661 in the multi-core test on Geekbench 6. In comparison, a Nubia phone with the model number NX769J, potentially the RedMagic 9, scored 1,596 and 5,977 points in the single and multi-core tests, respectively.
It is worth noting that both these devices have the same “pineapple” motherboard and “walt” governor, indicating the presence of the rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. However, the higher score achieved by the Galaxy S24 Plus suggests that it might be powered by an enhanced version of the chip.
According to reports, the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip features one primary core (Cortex-X4 CPU) running at 3.19GHz, five middle cores clocked at 2.96GHz, and two efficiency cores with clock speeds of 2.27 GHz. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy appears to have a different architecture with one core running at 3.30 GHz, three cores with maximum speeds of 3.15Ghz, two cores with clock speeds of 2.96Ghz, and two cores running at 2.27Ghz.
While these reports are exciting, it’s important to consider that they are based on leaked information and may not be entirely accurate. We’ll have to wait for official announcements from Samsung to confirm these details.
Additionally, there are speculations about which models will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. One leaker suggests that the standard Galaxy S24 model might be equipped with the Exynos 2400 chip, reserving the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Plus. However, this could be seen as a sign that Qualcomm’s chip is superior, so it remains to be seen how Samsung will approach this.
Another possibility is that Samsung might limit the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip to the higher-end models due to its higher cost. On a positive note, the same leaker has revealed that the yield of the Exynos 2400 chip has improved, which might lead to its availability in more regions. Rumors also suggest that the Exynos 2400 chip offers impressive specs and comparable performance to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
