Apple AirTag 2 won’t be coming out until 2025, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports. Apple considered releasing the next-generation AirTag trackers this year but decided to wait until 2025. The OG AirTag still fulfills its purpose as an item tracker and works well. Additionally, Apple allows third-party trackers to be used with its Find My network, but there is currently no real competition for Apple, so there is no pressure to release the next version of the product. Another reason for the delay is that Apple has a huge overhang of inventory that it needs to clear out. Apple Store back rooms and device storage warehouses are loaded with AirTag units.
The expected features of the AirTag 2 include a new second-generation Ultra-Wideband chip, similar to the one found in the iPhone 15 series, the Apple Watch Series 9, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. This new chip can communicate with eligible Apple iPhone and Apple Watch models over greater distances compared to the U1 chip used in the OG AirTag and found in older iPhone and Apple Watch models.
