Snapchat has teamed up with Sony Pictures to introduce a new AR Lens for the movie Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, coinciding with the film’s release in theatres on March 22.
This exciting Snapchat AR Lens allows users to transform themselves into Slimer, the iconic green ghost from the Ghostbusters franchise. Available in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K., this feature brings a touch of supernatural fun to your snaps. To celebrate the launch, Snapchat and Sony Pictures have released a short video featuring Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire stars McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard.
The AR Lens is a playful tribute to the famous “Who you gonna call?” line from Ghostbusters. Users are prompted to answer the call before being magically transformed into Slimer for some ghostly photo or video fun.
Elana Sulzer, U.S. head of entertainment at Snapchat, expressed excitement about collaborating with Sony Pictures on this project. She mentioned that bringing the iconic Slimer character to life through AR technology and featuring stars from the film in a Snapchat video call was a fantastic way to engage audiences in this supernatural world.
According to Snapchat, they have over 14 million daily active users and more than 800 million monthly active users. Additionally, over 300 million Snapchatters interact with AR experiences on the platform every day, resulting in an average of six billion AR Lens plays daily. A report by NRG in 2021 found that Snapchatters were 1.7 times more likely to watch a movie on premiere weekend compared to non-Snapchatters.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is now showing in theatres. The film introduces a new generation of Ghostbusters led by Paul Rudd while also bringing back original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts for an exciting reunion on screen.
