EU Commission Seeks Clarity from Apple on Epic Dispute: What’s Next in the Telecom Battle?

The European officials are closely monitoring Apple’s actions against Epic Games, the creator of the popular Fortnite game. Apple has been summoned by the European Commission to provide further explanations under the Digital Markets Act regarding its recent decisions.

In a recent email statement, a spokesperson for the European Commission mentioned that they have requested more information from Apple regarding their actions against Epic Games. Specifically, the EU officials are concerned about Apple’s decision to prevent Epic Games from launching its own online marketplace on iPhones and iPads in Europe, and they want to investigate whether this violates EU technology rules.

The conflict between Apple and Epic Games dates back to 2020 when Apple disabled Epic’s developer account in the U.S. and other markets for including a link to its own in-app payment platform in Fortnite. This move allowed Fortnite to bypass the Apple Tax, resulting in a violation of App Store regulations.

Following a lawsuit, Apple was required to make it easier for developers to use third-party in-app payment platforms but did not allow Epic to install its own app store on iPhones. As part of changes brought about by the Digital Markets Act, Apple did provide Epic with a developer account in the EU.

However, this EU account was later revoked by Apple due to past breaches of contract by Epic during their legal dispute. Epic believes that Apple’s actions are motivated by revenge for previous criticisms made against the tech giant.

Overall, this ongoing feud between Apple and Epic Games continues to draw attention from regulatory bodies such as the European Commission as they seek further clarity on these matters. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
