A former UPS employee in Winnipeg is facing charges for allegedly stealing and reselling Apple products worth $1.3 million from a warehouse. Orville Martirez Beltrano, 30, is accused of taking advantage of his role as a local sorting supervisor to steal around 866 Apple items.
According to reports, Beltrano sold the stolen goods on Kijiji for cash or e-transfers. Investigations revealed that he deposited $232,000 in cash into his bank accounts from September to January. Beltrano was arrested on January 22 and is facing charges including theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, and possession of proceeds of crime.
During a search at Beltrano’s home and car, authorities found $9,000 in cash hidden in a Nike bag, a Mac laptop, and jewelry valued at over $9,100. In a police interview, Beltrano confessed to stealing the Apple products and jewelry and admitted that the cash was proceeds from their sales.
Court documents also show that Beltrano used the funds to purchase a home in Winnipeg’s South Pointe area for $630,000 and pay off a debt on a white Audi purchased in 2021 for $60,000. Prosecutors are now seeking to seize Beltrano’s property, including his home, the Audi, the $9,000 in cash, and his bank accounts.
It’s important to note that Apple can track stolen devices and it is possible that UPS can do the same. It’s surprising that Beltrano would accept e-transfers for selling stolen goods and not expect to get caught for these alleged crimes. Stay tuned for updates on this case as it unfolds.
