Japan launches an investigation into alleged monopolistic actions by Google

Google is being investigated by Japan’s Fair Trade Commission

The Japan Fair Trade Commission is currently conducting an investigation into Google regarding potential antitrust violations. The focus of the investigation is centered around allegations that Google paid Android phone manufacturers to exclude search engines from its competitors.

Specifically, the Commission is examining Google’s practices concerning the pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome on Android devices. While the popularity of Google services is not the main concern, the Commission is assessing whether Google attempted to eliminate competition through its actions.

This is not the first time Google has faced antitrust investigations. In 2020, the US Justice Department opened a similar investigation, which is currently ongoing. The trial alleges that Google entered into agreements with other companies to prioritize its search engine over alternatives from competitors, which is deemed improper. South Korea has also initiated an investigation into Google’s practices.

The outcomes of these investigations are still uncertain. However, it is evident that regulatory bodies are committed to ensuring fair competition, and Google remains under their scrutiny.
