AT&T Nationwide Outage: Possible Cyberattack Suspected as Cause

The AT&T network experienced a major outage this morning, leading to service interruptions for AT&T subscribers and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) like Cricket that rely on the AT&T network. While Verizon and T-Mobile claimed their networks were unaffected, some of their subscribers experienced issues when trying to connect to AT&T customers.

AT&T released a statement acknowledging the wireless service interruptions and stated that three-quarters of their network had been restored, with efforts underway to fully restore service. This incident led to a significant increase in online searches for ‘Cancel ATT’, indicating customer frustration with the outage.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal agencies are investigating the cause of the outage, exploring possibilities of a cyberattack or technical malfunction. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) mentioned that there were no signs of malicious activity but the cause remains unknown.

Local police departments advised residents about the nationwide outage, urging them to use alternative means to contact emergency services if needed. Approximately 100 million mobile and broadband customers were affected by this morning’s outage.

Phones Canada will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. We understand how important reliable network service is for our customers, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by this morning’s disruption.
