Boosting Connectivity: Federal and Alberta Governments Invest $112 Million in High-Speed Internet Expansion • Phones Canada News

Phones Canada is excited to share the latest news about the federal government and Alberta’s joint investment of over $112 million to expand high-speed internet access in rural areas of the province. This initiative will benefit over 22,500 households, including 3,400 Indigenous households, in 166 rural and remote communities.

As Minister of Rural Economic Development, Gudie Hutchings emphasized the importance of high-speed internet access, stating that it has evolved from a luxury to a necessity. This investment aligns with the government’s goal to connect 98% of Canadians to high-speed internet by 2026.

Chief Ouray Crowfoot of Siksika Nation also highlighted the significance of reliable internet access in today’s world. He mentioned that this initiative is not just about bridging the digital divide but also about creating pathways for a healthier and more connected future for all.

In March 2022, the federal government and Alberta committed to investing up to $780 million to enhance high-speed internet infrastructure in rural communities. Although specific telecom providers were not mentioned in the recent announcement, the focus remains on providing all Canadians with internet speeds of at least 50 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload by 2030.

With funding from the Broadband Fund, Canada has already achieved a 93.5% access rate to high-speed internet. This ongoing effort reflects our commitment to ensuring connectivity for all Canadians and building a more inclusive digital future. Stay tuned for more updates on advancements in telecommunications across Canada!
