Government Pumps $2 Million Into Internet and Mobile Connectivity in Northwest Territories • Phones Canada Updates

The federal government has recently announced an exciting development in the telecommunications sector, with over $2 million in funding allocated to enhance high-speed Internet and mobile connectivity in underserved regions, particularly focusing on Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories.

Here are the key highlights of this initiative:

– Northwestel will receive over $1.9 million to bring high-speed internet to 152 Indigenous households in Whatì.
– SSi Micro has been granted $480,000 to expand cellular access through a repositionable communications shelter near Fort Providence, enabling hunting and fishing territories to remain connected.

Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Gudie Hutchings, emphasized the importance of connectivity for accessing education, healthcare, growing businesses, improving safety, and providing peace of mind. This investment aligns with the government’s goal to achieve high-speed Internet accessibility for 98% of the population by 2026, ultimately aiming for universal coverage by 2030.

At Phones Canada, we recognize the significance of reliable telecommunications services in enhancing people’s lives and enabling economic development. Stay tuned for more updates on how these investments are transforming connectivity in remote communities across Canada.
