Apple Confirms Continued iPhone Web Apps Support in EU with iOS 17.4 Update – Phones Canada News

Apple has recently announced that it will maintain support for Home Screen web apps in the EU with the upcoming iOS 17.4 update, despite previous plans to discontinue it. This decision comes after facing criticism and potential investigations by EU authorities.

Initially, Apple had intended to end support for iOS web apps in the EU due to requirements under the Digital Markets Act. However, following backlash from various parties, including the Open Web Advocacy organization, Apple has reversed its decision.

In response to concerns raised, Apple explained that they will continue to allow Home Screen web apps on iOS to be built directly on WebKit. This ensures consistency with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS.

Despite the initial announcement, Home Screen web apps in the EU will still be powered by WebKit, whether added through Safari or other methods. This arrangement has been in place for years and will persist in iOS 17.4 for user continuity.

By retaining support for Home Screen web apps, Apple aims to address user concerns and demonstrate its commitment to providing a seamless experience for consumers in the EU. The company acknowledges the importance of aligning with security standards while ensuring functionality and accessibility for all users.
