Netflix Cracks Down on Apple Payments for Long-time Subscribers in Canada

In 2018, Netflix made a strategic decision to stop accepting payments for new subscriptions through the App Store. This change impacted new subscribers and those returning after a break, who are now required to pay Netflix directly through its website. By bypassing Apple’s in-app payment processing platform, Netflix can avoid paying the 15% to 30% fee typically associated with in-app transactions.

According to Netflix representative Momo Zhao, all “members on the basic plan who were using an iTunes method of payment” must now switch to paying Netflix directly using a credit or debit card. While existing subscribers who signed up before this change were able to maintain their subscription through the App Store, this option is now being phased out.

Grandfathered subscribers who have continued to pay through the App Store will soon need to transition to direct payments as well. This shift has caused some confusion and frustration among users, as highlighted by a tweet from an affected subscriber. It’s essential for long-time Netflix customers to be aware of these changes and prepare for potential adjustments in their monthly billing process.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, where your preferred payment method is no longer supported, you may need to adjust your subscription plan accordingly. Whether you opt for a slightly higher cost with no ads or a lower fee with occasional interruptions, the key takeaway is that all payments will now be processed directly by Netflix.

To ensure uninterrupted access to your favorite shows and movies on Netflix, keep an eye out for communication from the streaming service regarding these billing changes. By staying informed and proactive, you can smoothly transition to the new payment system and continue enjoying your entertainment without any disruptions.
