Phones Canada explores YouTube’s new transparency rules for AI-generated content creators

Generative AI has become a trending topic in the tech world, with companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft developing impressive AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DALL-E. While these advancements are exciting, it’s crucial to also consider the ethical implications and risks associated with AI-generated content creation.

Social media platforms like Meta-owned Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have already taken steps to address concerns around deepfake technology and other AI-generated content. Now, YouTube is joining the effort by introducing a new tool that requires creators to disclose when their videos feature realistic AI-generated alterations.

Here’s what you need to know about YouTube’s new guidelines for AI-generated content:

– When uploading content, creators will now be prompted to indicate if their videos contain “meaningfully altered or synthetically generated” elements that could be mistaken for genuine footage.
– This disclosure is not required for simple edits, special effects, or obviously unrealistic AI creations.
– Labels will be displayed on videos to inform viewers about AI-generated content, with prominent placement on videos discussing sensitive subjects like health, politics, or finance.
– In cases where creators fail to disclose AI-generated content, YouTube may apply labels to videos and potentially implement penalties in the future such as content removal or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program.
– The new labeling system will first launch for mobile viewers before expanding to desktop and TV. The disclosure option for creators will initially be available on desktop and then on mobile. YouTube is also seeking feedback to improve this process over time.

Stay tuned as YouTube continues to refine its approach to transparency in AI-generated content. Let us know your thoughts on these new guidelines!
