Unlocking the Potential: Google Expands ‘At a Glance’ Widget Access to All Apps

Android users have been longing for the return of lock screen widgets, a feature that was removed years ago. The good news is that Google might be considering bringing them back in a future Android update. While Android 15 may not reintroduce true lock screen widgets, there are indications of a potential workaround in the pipeline.

Recent reports suggest that Android 15 could introduce lock screen widgets for tablets, accessible through a separate space by swiping from the right edge, similar to iOS’s “Live Activities.” Although this approach may not work seamlessly on smaller phone screens, Google already has a foundation in place with the “At a Glance” feature found on Pixel phones.

The existing “At a Glance” widget may soon support widgets from other applications due to an API change that Google is reportedly working on. This change aims to make At a Glance compatible with RemoteViews, which is essential for Android widgets.

Before this feature becomes a reality, Google needs to address some challenges, such as making widgets resizable to fit the limited lock screen space and ensuring they do not crash At a Glance or the entire lock screen. Additionally, convincing other smartphone manufacturers to include At a Glance on their devices will be crucial.

Google’s support for customized lock screens through Glance, already available on some budget Android devices, indicates their openness to incorporating widgets on the lock screen. While it’s unclear when these changes will take place – possibly in a future Android release post-Android 15 – there is hope for those who miss lock screen widgets and desire quick access to app information without unlocking their phone every time.
