Apple Bans Epic’s Developer Account Despite Approved DMA • Phones Canada Blog

Apple’s recent decision to terminate Epic’s developer account has caused quite a stir in the tech community. Despite initially receiving approval under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Epic Games Sweden AB found their account suddenly shut down by Apple.

The controversy arises from Epic’s intention to introduce the Epic Games Store and Fortnite to iOS devices in Europe, as required by the DMA. This act, which mandates Apple to allow third-party app stores like the Epic Games Store, was violated by Apple’s abrupt termination of Epic’s developer account.

By cutting off access to Epic, Apple is essentially stifling competition and discouraging developers from exploring alternative marketplaces. This move not only goes against fair competition but also raises concerns about Apple’s commitment to legal standards.

Apple justifies its actions by pointing to public criticism from Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, regarding their proposed DMA compliance plan. However, this retaliation only serves to highlight Apple’s disregard for fair competition and industry standards.

Despite this setback, it is worth noting that Epic has a history of collaboration with Apple, including the release of various apps and games on the App Store and the use of Unreal Engine in Apple-marketed apps. This termination comes as a surprise given their past working relationship.

The DMA was put in place to address power imbalances that allow companies like Apple to block competing stores and apps. The unilateral termination of Epic’s developer account by Apple only underscores the need for such regulations.

Epic has pledged to continue advocating for competition and choice on iOS devices globally, emphasizing the importance of fair market practices in the tech industry. Stay tuned for further developments as this story unfolds.
